Low testosterone is a growing concern for men over 30. While some decrease in testosterone levels is normal as we age, one’s testosterone levels should not be so low as to cause conditions like erectile dysfunction or lack of sexual drive. Someone experiencing symptoms of low testosterone should seek a doctor, and if diagnosed with the condition, then testosterone treatment is needed. We at Executive Pharmacy want to help provide more information on hormone replacement therapy for men, as there are concerns about the safety of this treatment. We are located in Miami-Dade County and also serve patients in Broward County.

More Information About Low Testosterone

Testosterone is the hormone responsible for much of the male body’s physical developments and functions. These include things like body growth, the growth of hair, the deepening of the voice during puberty, sexual drive, and more. The normal range of testosterone in a male body is between 300 and 800 nanograms per deciliter depending on the person. Low testosterone is where the body has less than 300 ng/dL, and while some decrease in testosterone can be expected with age, levels will not naturally lower below this amount. Some causes of low testosterone include:

  • Testicular Cancer
  • Cancer Treatment
  • Injury to the Testicles
  • Hormonal Disorders
  • HIV/Aids
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Chronic Liver Disease or Kidney Disease
  • Obesity

Risks Associated with Testosterone Treatment

Hormone replacement therapy for men is an option to counteract an individual’s low testosterone levels. That said, there may be some concern about risks associated with this form of treatment, and it’s important to know what to expect if receiving it. Hormone replacement therapy may come with minor side effects but can also have long term effects as well. While rare, some may experience an increase in acne, the tenderness and/or swelling of one’s breasts and/or ankles, and disrupted breathing during sleep. These are relatively minor conditions; however, there is a small risk of blood clotting, so your doctor will likely watch your red blood cell counts as you receive treatment.

Long-term, there does appear to be higher risks of cardiovascular problems in those receiving hormone replacement therapy. These conditions include things like heart attacks, heart disease, or strokes. That said, these risks are unlikely, especially for short-term usage, and the benefits associated with hormone replacement therapy can outweigh them. You will want to speak with your doctor thoroughly on your condition to make the right choice.
